Description:
Small work tables were generally suited for any domestic purpose but were often called "sewing tables," perhaps from long usage of that sort associated with them. This table was used by Martha Jefferson Randolph for sewing and exhibits features typical of the Monticello joinery such as large astragal molding surrounding the base and drawers with a scratch bead. The front of the table also exhibits reeding that is unique amongst Monticello joinery furniture. [ See "Worlds of Thomas Jefferson at Monticello," Susan Stein, p. 288-89] Tables such as this one came into fashion during the Federal period in America after the Revolutionary War. The earliest were in the Hepplewhite style with features similar to those found in this table: square tapering legs, a geometrically straight body and the bail handles with stamped oval plates.
